Comments Delta flights from RDU to Atlanta to Bonaire. We left at 6:00am and were at Belmar Apartments in Bonaire at 2:00pm. Attended mandatory hour plus Bonaire orientation at 3:00pm. Belmar Apartment dive/facility staff were all professional and helpful. Belmar apartments are huge and well appointed with absolutely gorgeous views of the ocean from any of the 22 apartments. We stayed in Barracuda room 22, penthouse which is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath apartment with a very large & spacious outdoor patios. We loved everything about Belmar except the bathrooms in the penthouse are hot with no cross ventilation. The layout of Belmar is perfect for divers and everything has easy access to dive lockers, rinse tanks, air and nitrox tanks, etc, etc. Our Nissan rental truck was in great shape and drove smoothly but you must know how to drive a stick. The Belmar house reef (Sarah's Reef) is nice with many squid, turtles, and fish. We stayed a week in mid October and went to 7 shore dives including Oil Slick Leap, Andrea II, The Cliff, LaMancha, Buddy's Reef, Alice in Wonderland, & Salt Pier. We also did a few am dives with East Coast Divers which we loved. Despite some reports, diving the east coast was not that rough and we found it very safe and easy diving with a great crew. This is our 3rd trip to Bonaire and the first time we did only shore dives ... we much prefer the freedom of shore dives vs boat dives anyway. Another piece of disinformation surrounds the petty crime on Bonaire. We talked to a lot of divers & residents on Bonaire and came away believing there is absolutely not difference between petty crime on Bonaire and that of most places of similar environments in the US. Here's the bottom-line, any place where your vehicle is left in a desolate, out-way-locations, with no one around ... you should not be surprised if some amount of theft may happen. With that being said, we did not find anyone who experienced any problems. We did leave our vehicle unlocked with nothing of value visible. Again, I would not worry about it.
