Comments Great dive operation. It is hard to get around Bermuda (no car rentals, buses don’t let you bring a 50 lb. dive bag on board). Dawn was at my door within 20 minutes of my booking phone call with her scooter to pick up my gear-they also returned it after my 2 days of diving. They cleaned and dried my gear after each day of diving, and had it ready on the boat the second day. Nice, clean boat with a marine head, towels, cookies, coffee, bottled water, warm water rinse. They made provisions for the photographer on board, I’m not sure how he would rate them, but they looked adequate to me. The boat reportedly takes no more than 10 and is more than big enough for that. We dove with 3 my first day and 5 my second. The dive master was knowledgeable and very helpful. The sites were picked by the captain-on the second day, it was quite a long haul, but worth the trip.

First day- the wreck Pelanaion. Because of the way this wreck settled, you can swim under the hull. There is a large screw on what used to be the deck, boilers, and some vertical stuff. At the deep end of the dive (about 55 feet), there are some tall rock pillars (about 40’). Fish life was Blue and Queen Angels, one large grouper and a few other typical tropicals, although it was generally sparse. Vis about 40 feet. Because of the chop, we went inside Castle Harbour and dove “Golden Eye” for the second dive. This is a reef with a max depth of about 25’. It looked pretty boring on the way out, with the visible life being limited to sea cucumbers. On the way back, I started looking into the holes in the reef, and saw about 20 spiny lobster, including a couple of 3 pounders. The biggest surprise, however, was seeing a very large black grouper (perhaps 4 feet?) inside a very narrow cave. Also swam over a covered archaeology project-apparently a very old shipwreck. Vis about 20 feet.

Second day-the wreck Cristobal Colon. Vis was about 80-100. pleasant dive, same sparse fish life. Lots of what appears to be new growth of brain coral. Second dive North rock. Vis about 50 feet, depth max about 25. Lots of swim-unders and swim throughs, although you have to look to find them. I had a diving first (for me) at this site. I had just located a pretty well hidden and kind of narrow (about 5 feet wide) overhung swim through, and was about at the mid point when there was a sound as loud as a cruise ship going overhead. When I immerged from the swim through, a turtle shot past me moving as fast as I have ever seen one move. We later learned that we had been underwater during a 4.4-4.6 earthquake that had occurred some 50 miles off shore.

I wouldn’t return to Bermuda just to dive, but it is a great place to get in a few dives and have a family vacation. When we go back to Bermuda, I will definitely be using Tuckers Point dive shop because of its friendly and professional staff, services and low-boat loading.
