Comments We timed our week of diving trip to avoid the rainy season, maximize the water temperature and avoid holiday crowds. Our plans were effective except for the precipitation, which could be considered wet even by rainy season standards. Other than rainy continually 5 of the 7 days, the trip was wonderful. This was the best diving that I remember having experienced in 25 years of semiannual trips to the Caribbean. All dive sites for our 15 dives, excluding the Blue Hole, were within a 10 minute boat ride. The dive masters, particularly ours, were amazing. The resort was only an hour from the Blue Hole, so we were the second dive boat of the day to arrive. We quickly descended. Unlike most of those with whom I had spoken with before I left, i was not disappointed. In fact, on the contrary, this may have been one of the best single dives of my life. Everyone is so obsessed with the formations of the cave that they forget to look down at the hole. All of the pictures seem to look up instead. Maybe we just had unusually great visibility because of conditions and our early arrival. It seemed like I was floating in clear air, above a midnight blue lake, surrounded by white coastline. I felt like i was on another planet. On every dive, which averaged about 55 minutes, we saw something interesting about every minute: moray, turtles, sharks, on and on. At the end of the trip, we each received a personalize printout describing each dive, including dive time, maximum depth and sightings. Our dive master who grew up in the Turneffe Atoll, enthusiastically pointed out fish and creatures, dramatically acting out the hand signs representing each on. After she made the sign for drum fish, we joined in with signs for other instruments, almost losing our regulators because we were laughing so hard. The 7 acre island took me about 15 minutes to leisurely kayak around. Having only 20 or so guests allowed us to build up very close relationship quite quickly. We ate every meal family style and everyone was assigned to a specific dive boat. Unfortunately my friend and I are wine and food junkies so the food did not some close to meeting our high standards, especially since we have never forgot the incredible food at St. George's Cay's, also off of Belize, where we used to stay before they sold the place. I cannot wait to return when the weather is nicer, so I can fully appreciate the truly idyllic setting and near perfect diving.
