Comments Previous critical report on Ramon's Village should be taken with heavy dose of salt. We had a great time! Small group diving on small, responsive boats. We dove all week with excellent divemaster, Luis, who gives most thorough initial orientation, and then respects divers' abilities -- nearby and observant but not intrusive once he knows your abilities; but ready, involved and safety-conscious with less-experienced divers when needed. Knows the reef and canyons, and where to find the fish. Ramon's Village accommodations are good, though not luxurious -- high thatched roof huts with a/c and ceiling fans, older bathroom appliances. All staff, from dining to office, to bar, to pier, are extremely friendly and will help in every way; great service. Meal prices are reasonable. Rooms that adjoin the main road can be noisy at night with a/c off -- if you want a bar that's open late, walk down the beach, as this place sleeps at night. Town of San Pedro is pleasant, not developed -- no high rise hotels, no fast food chains. One good internet cafe. No one hassling you on the streets. Several good (not fancy) restaurants, with sand floors. The pier at Ramon's Village is well suited for divers -- close to the rooms, restaurants, bar and bathrooms. Clean-up and storage areas are handy. Ten minutes to and from several dive sites, which offer "canyon" coral outcroppings, like fingers extending into the Gulf. Numerous spotted eagle rays patrol the canyons. Nurse sharks and hawksbill turtles often seen, along with lobsters, countless grouper, blue chromis, parrot/angel/damselfish, goldenhead jawfish, barracuda, and a resident spotted drum or two. Typically no current or very mild surge, so you can home right in on whatever you want to see. On one day when I was the only member of my group to dive, I was given the option either of joining another group or, as I'd already been to one spot a couple of times, to have a separate boat and divemaster to myself. Ramon's Village serves divers. Day trips to the mainland can be arranged, as can night dives. Near to airport as well. We plan to return and dive with Luis at Ramon's Village again.
