Comments My wife and I dove with Ramon’s for a week at San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. Prior to arriving, I emailed the staff with my plans to dive locally as well as the Blue Hole and/or Turneffe. I also chartered a boat them so that some friends could snorkel while we did scuba at Hol Chan.

In emails in the months prior to arrival, staff promptly replied and set up things. Upon arrival, they were organized and knew our dive schedule. Desk staff was perhaps not the warmest/friendliest, but they were very competent and accommodating. We changed plans a bit (such as wife only doing 1 dive instead of 2 daily) and they were very accepting of changes. I had no problems at all with Ramon’s. We used their convenient lockers and rinsed equipment after dives. We had our own gear, though wife rented a BC which was in good condition.

We are more advanced divers, and Ramon’s put us on a smaller boat with fairly consistent divers throughout the week. The divemaster, Juan, was really fantastic. It may be hard for him to walk as an older adult (as I am), but in the water, he was like a fish, and had enough air by the end of the dives to find and retrieve someone’s GoPro on two occasions! He didn’t get bent going back down, though it wasn’t extremely deep. Juan was helpful to those that needed it, gave just enough guidance, found macro and big fish life, and was also quite friendly (more so than the captain/crew, but I had no negative experiences with the crew at all).

As for the diving itself, we really enjoyed the local dives at Ambergris Caye. They were so close that our surface interval was back on the dock, which enabled 1 tank dive vs. 2. The reefs were healthy and has come back from the hurricane a few years ago (though it probably has declined over the past few decades from global warming). There were so many nurse sharks swimming with us, including a pregnant one, that we almost quit looking at them. We also saw large lobsters, groupers, tangs, barracuda, trunk fish, eels, dolphin, bull sharks, a huge school of Spanish mackerels, rays, turtles, pufferfish, etc. etc. Juan led us in swim throughs in the canyons that we dove, and allowed us to dive our own profiles. Dive times were 45-55 minutes typically and we went down no lower than 80-90 feet.

Because the local diving was so good, we decided not to bother with the Blue Hole so we wouldn’t have to get up so early (and saved some $). The diving was really about the best we’ve seen in the Caribbean, even Cozumel, and we are returning to Belize in a few months for more! We will probably go to Turneffe this time while we stay for a few days at Caye Caulker.

All in all, I would highly recommend Ramon’s as a dive op. We ate at their restaurant a few times, and preferred breakfast over some of their other meals. We stayed at Diamante Condos which are close to Ramon’s, but Ramon’s resort seems nice. It’s a short walk to the center of town.
