Comments We stayed at Long Caye 2 weeks. Despite windy conditions and some cloudy days, we were able to dive premium sites nearly every day. There is some dead coral, but abundant sponges, soft corals, and reef fish. Half Moon Caye Natural Monument is a 10 minute boat ride away, and has more large snappers and grouper, generally, but we liked the dives adjacent to Long Caye as much or more. Many sites are only 5 minutes away, so we came back to the Lodge between. On most days, 3 dives were scheduled.
Diving was along a wall, with lots of cracks and grottos. We saw 1 or 2 nurse or reef sharks almost every dive. Eagle rays are common in the shallows, but only occasional during dives.
Half Moon Caye is a nesting site for red footed boobies, and frigate birds. There are crocodiles on Long Caye, but are rarely seen.
Itza Lodge and Huracan Diving seem to be about equal as far as accomodations and food. Itza is on the beach, while the Huracan facility is back in the woods a hundred yards.Itza offers diving, and seems fine, although they didn't have their own boat or dive instructors/ masters on staff, but hired as needed. Sand fleas are present, but the Lodge sprays with a natural product to diminish, and we found any type of repellent to work.
We dove the Blue Hole, but were not that impressed. There is very little life, visibility is not great. We snorkelled there on the next trip and found some of the nicest reef and abundant fish, however.
