Comments First, a word on Caye Caulker.

As a fifty something, ex Peace Corps volunteer, I look for both comfort and some authenticity. Meaning that I’m not interested in five star sterility. So Caye Caulker is the place for me. It’s a combination of comfort and just the right level of funky: food on the street for a couple of bucks if you like, or more expensive if you insist. A fresh juice stand across the street where a liter of freshly squeezed orange juice is $2, or a restaurant a little further up where you can get a $3 espresso.

For our second trip, we rented a house. There are plenty available. Ours was a really nice two bedroom for $700 a week. You can go a lot cheaper or more expensive. Try Caye Caulker Rentals on the Internet: a nicely designed website.

Now, the diving. Most folks seem to know about the reef in Belize. If not, you are in for a great surprise. Caye Caulker is about a 15-minute boat ride to the famous Hol Chan and the marine park. We spent a lot of time there, going back many days. We also dove the “must do” sights, such as the Blue Hole. The best part of the Blue Hole is the other dives, particularly the Aquarium. Make certain you also dive the Elbow.

We used Big Fish Divers, a well-established outfit on the island. Since we were a party of five, we frequently got one of the smaller boats (200 hp) to ourselves and developed a lasting friendship with our dive master, Ish. He took us where we wanted, which was mostly his recommendations and let us dive our profile. For the trips to places such as the Blue Hole, we joined larger groups on the bigger boat (600 hp). That too was fine as he stayed our dive master, but all the other dive masters are knowledgeable and very friendly. In the larger group, expect to dive a set profile, And as hoped, with 25 dives in two weeks, we got a nice discount.

Finally, Belize. Having traveled the world and still enjoying new places, we keep going back to Belize. Something about the place that really makes you think you may have found that special place you’ve been looking for all these years.
