Comments Booking the trip was easy. Travel to the island was via the weekly scheduled Spirit Air charter from Ft. Lauderdale run primarilly for guests of the Club Med on the island. Unfortunately, Spirit Air pilots went on strike while we were on-island but the airline arranged for a substitute charter. However, delays in the service meant we missed our connecting flight home in Ft. Lauderdale, requiring an unexpected overnight stay in Ft. Lauderdale and an extra flight leg.

Riding Rock features well-worn but clean facilities in a no-frills atmosphere. The food was filling but not deluxe. Service was friendly and responsive. It is a 10 minute walk from the hotel to the marina. San Salvador is a low-lying, scrubby island with lots of nice beaches and friendly residents but recreational opportunities for non-divers on the island are limited to beach-walking and fishing.

Riding Rock's dive operation is great. Divemaster Lynne is organized and devoted to giving guests a great experience. Captain Bruce is skilled and does a great job operating the roomy boat. Towels, water and fruit slices were offered every day. Trips to divesites are 10 - 30 minutes. The routine is two morning dives, a return to the dock for lunch at the hotel and then one afternoon dive. Lynne encouraged us to consider skipping the one night dive and taking an additional afternoon dive instead.

Lynne accuratly described the reefs as not being colorful. Algae has covered the vast majority of the reef structure. One positive was that while the number of corals was not significant, the variety of corals was. Another positive is that the numbers and variety of fish were both encouraging to see. We saw the resident hammerheads on one of our 17 dives and Caribbean reef sharks were present on 15 of our 17 dives.
