When was the last time you were the first people to dive a site ?? When did you do exploratory diving and name a dive site ?? My 2 Brit dive buddie's and I headed off for Coral Caverns Dive Resort on Andros Island after reading about them in a UK dive magazine. I really did not know what to expect. As promised, my ride to the resort (about 20 mins) was waiting for me at the Andros airport. Upon arrival, I was met by Lucia (owner) and escorted to our room. My 2 dive buddies had arrived early in the day and already had done 2 dives. We were scheduled to share a double room and bath, but since we were the only guests, Lucia graciously opened up the 3 bedroom bungalow(at no charge) so we each had our own room and bathroom. Coral Caverns is a diamond in the rough. It is easy diving--2 dives per day--virgin sites on over half the dives. Mark and Lucia are the consumate hosts, making you feel very much like family. Diving is from a Rigid inflatable with sun roof, water and adequate seating (19ft). Exit is by backroll and entry is through a trap door in the bow--very easy !!! Before you head out to dive, they ask you what you want to do and see--no preset times or itineraries. Depthes and times were up to you within reason. No baby sitting--dive your own profile. We had 1-3 reef sharks 4-6ft on most dives that cruised lazily by. We appreciated that this was a natural sighting, not the result of shark feeding, which Coral Caverns refuses to do. The underwater topography was entrancing with wonderful swim throughs and canyons 15-30 ft deep. The soft corals were great. There were many types of reef fish and common sightings of jacks, barracuda and pompano(even a manta on one dive). On one day the weather was perfect for us to dive the Tongue of the Ocean. The dive site is a US Navy buoy tethered in 5000 ft of water. The draw here is the chance to see Silky sharks and other pelagics, but there is no guarantee. We were fortunate !! We had numersous Silkies around at all times (up to 9 at once) as well as Mahi Mahi, yellow fin tuna and numerous types of jacks. At times the swell and chop was 6-10 ft outside the reef, but as long as we were comfortable with the conditions, Mark had no problems taking us where we wanted to go. The accommodations are confortable and clean. If you are looking for Glitz, this is not the place for you. The pool was down for maintenance while we were there, but the weather was such that it was not needed, and you could use a kayak if you wanted. Food was quite good and plentiful. For breakfast and lunch, Daisy or Lucia would ask what you wanted and they would prepare it for you.If you are not a diver or fisherman, I think this is not for you. But if you want the chance to dive some virgin sites in a relaxed atmosphere and be hosted by some great Texas people (owners Lucia and Mark) This is the Jewel you may be looking for.
