Comments Despite being an older boat (the original Cayman Aggressor if I recall), the boat was in good shape, and the crew, despite being down one person and with a newbie on staff, was outstanding. Capt Chris really knew his stuff and kept the short-handed crew on point. Not that they needed much coaching as first mate Brad and DM Romel were excellent. DM/Photo Pro/Chef Cyrill gets extra kudos for stepping in at the last minute and NAILING every role. And the food was delish! Newish guy Garrett did a great job as well and will be an excellent addition to the Aggressor family.

COVID tests were required within 7 days prior to boarding. The required test for reentry to the US was set up by Aggressor and handled expeditiously.

The initial orientation included a fire briefing which entailed donning life preservers, mustering on the dive deck, and escape routes being defined very clearly. The initial guest room briefings also included fire escape routes, including making guests push open a heavy trap door to illustrate that, while heavy, it was never locked. Guests were instructed that they may only charge batteries in their rooms while present and awake. Abundant charging stations were available under the camera table on the dive deck.

Diving was off the mothership and was very easy in and out. The diving itself was mellow and quite suitable for novices. There was some excitement on the Washing Machine pass dive as guests and crew were tumbled around in a scour hole before drifting speedily through the rest of the dive.

The good news: we saw lots of reef sharks, aided no doubt by the ‘triangle” (more like a pyramid, actually) the crew hung off the bow or carried on the dive. This device functions sort of like chumming, but the sharks never actually eat anything, attracting them without putting them into feeding mode. We also spotted a number of turtles, including some massive loggerheads on the Lost Blue Hole dawn dive. Plenty of southern stingrays around as well.

The bad news: with just a couple of exceptions the reefs are in pretty bad shape due to stony coral tissue loss disease and lionfish. Juvenile fish populations were low, as was general fish levels. We did see some large grouper on a couple of sites. Crew and guests did their best to cull what lionfish we saw.
