Comments There used to be a dive shop at Xanadu Resort. Apparently now the Xanadu dive operation is under the umbrella of Aquasports (based in the US)--there is no physical Xanadu dive shop anymore. We contacted Xanadu and UNEXSO via e-mail about a month before the trip--and very quickly heard back from Ray Lightbourne of Xanadu/Aquasports, UNEXCO a few days later. UNEXSO wanted us to reserve all of our diving for the week (and I think wanted us to pay upfront as well--I generally don't object to that when we're going on a liveaboard or to a dive resort, but don't always want to do that when we're staying in a condo somewhere). Ray was more than willing to be flexible--and less expensive. We told him we definitely wanted to dive the first 3 days we were there--and then add more as we went along. We got to Grand Bahama on a Friday and planned to dive at least Sun-Tues. Apparently it had been raining nonstop for days before we got there, but we ended up getting 5 days (2 tanks/day) of great diving in! Ray was awesome, especially when you consider the fact that he is practically a one-man operation. The first day, there were two other divers with us, who were both fairly inexperienced. After that, we had Ray and the boat to ourselves. While Ray always reminded us to watch our air and depth limits, he let us direct the dives as much as we wanted, took us back to sites we really liked, and let us keep swimming around if he felt like ending the dive early. Coral looked healthy as did the fish. We found tons of arrow crabs, shrimp, and other little critters. The one shock was the number of lionfish!! (I'd read about the invasion, but had not been diving in Florida in several years.) We saw more lionfish on one dive in the Bahamas than in all of our dives in the Pacific put together. Shark Alley was fun--we did not do a shark feed dive, but to see 8-10 reef sharks within 30 seconds of going under was pretty cool. Theo's Wreck was great, too.

If you're going to be on Grand Bahama, look Ray up!
