Comments Yongala Divers run a dive operation about 1-1.5 hours south of Townsville. The dive is on the S.S. Yongala wreck. The dive shop is very friendly and accommodating. Nitrox is available and is blended using partial pressures.

The drill is to load out all your gear on a Zodiac boat on a trailer which is later pulled by tractor to the beach for a launch by tractor. When everyone is transported to the beach by vehicle you load out on the boat and then run +/- 30 minutes to the wreck. The dive is a 2 tank dive with max depth first (can't go past bottom at +/- 90') and the second dive is across the top of the wreck @ +/- 60'. The dive site is protected in a green zone and the marine life is testimony t that fact. I have never seen so many fish schooling in one location in all my diving experience. We saw many sea snakes, turtles, giant groupers, cobia and typical reef fish. The coral growth on the wreck was impressive as well. There is "NO" penetration allowed on the wreck. The first day we dove there were +/- 12 divers (crowded on the Zodiac), the second day we only had 5-6 divers (just right for a Zodiac).

Upon return to the Yongala dive shop the dive shop provided a BBQ feed that was good and welcomed. This dive is a definite must do dive if you are in the vicinity of Townsville.

UW Photo Comments The boat used for the dive was a Zodiac type boat and there was no camera or video storage (wet or dry) except a basket which was slid under the seats. The dive shop had a single rinse tank for wet suits and a single tank for regulators/BCDS but no dedicated tank for photography gear. A fresh water hose was available to rinse video housing with.
