This dive is one of three local dives that I have done many times, the others being the HMS Swan and Lena wrecks (both sunk as dive wrecks).
The busselton jetty is the longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, and is 1.8 km long. It is the main tourist attraction in the town. During the summer a tourist train runs hourly to the end of the jetty where there is an underwater observatory. It will also take you and your dive gear for $20 return.
There is a platform and a ladder near the end of the jetty for access. I kitted up and entered there. The max depth is 9metres. On a sunny day, the shafts of light coming down from the surface, interrupted by the many vertical piers is very pretty, especially if the water is clear, which in summer it usually is.
The last time I dived the jetty was in 2018, and there were some impressive schools of small to medium size fish, and the jetty piers were especially attractive with colourful red and white corals. This time both were absent. There were a few fish around but nothing like before, and the piers were mostly barren of the colourful corals. The highlight was an octopus near the end of the dive. I had my Olympus TG5 and wide angle lens and managed to get a few shots which weren’t bad.
Best thing was that it was a good feeling to be underwater for the first time since last September!
