Comments Diving at Tofo beach is definitely only for experienced, fit & confident divers. The diving is from rigid inflatable boats that are launched from a surf beach. Customers are asked to assist with pushing the RIB off the beach into the surf to chest level, then hauling themselves into the boat once fully afloat.
Unbelievably, the RIB had no ladder of any description, & whilst there was assistance with offloading weight belts & tanks into the RIB at the end of the dive, divers generally hauled themselves back into the RIB using the ropes attached to the side of the boat. I have dived from many RIBs in the past & all have had some sort of ladder available to assist with re-entry to the boat, so I found the absence of such a basic item inexplicable
Most of the group I visited Tofo with were in their 60’s, & entering/exiting the RIB in such a fashion was simply beyond their capacities. Of even greater concern was that when one of my party returned from a dive coughing up blood, the oxygen tank in the RIB was found to be inoperative because of corrosion. Fortunately the diver concerned had not suffered any serious injury, however the inoperative oxygen tank in the RIB was inexcusable, particularly given the remoteness of this location.
The diving itself was generally difficult, with most sites being quite deep (24 meters plus), with all sites bar one subject to currents of moderate strength. At best the dive sites were of reasonable quality, with “Manta Reef” & “The Office” being the best, with a pair of weedy scorpionfish being resident at The Office (my only sighting of Rhinopias in 30 years of diving). Some attractive purple-magenta leaf fish were seen, as well as a large frog fish at Outback. Large potato cod were regulalrly seen. One other site (Giant Castles) proved to be a waste of time due to its depth, poor vis & current levels.
Tofo was heavily advertised as being a manta hotspot, however only 1 was seen by anyone in my group & I witnessed none myself.
What Tofo does have in abundance is whalesharks. I snorkelled with at least 6 different whalesharks over the course of 6 days, at one point I was in the water with 3 different individuals. I was able to snorkel with one large (7 meter) whaleshark, at very close distance for over 5 minutes. This is certainly the place for high quality whaleshark viewing.
I was also able to snorkel with a pod of dolphins whilst returning from The Office.
Humpback whales were also regularly seen although we were not permitted to snorkel with these as they were generally accompanied by calves.
Divers who are keen to experience Tofo diving will need to bring an advanced diver certificate, or at very least log books documenting their experience in challenging conditions.
The guy who ran Peri-peri Divers, Steve, was a nice guy & running any business in Mozambique is challenging, but he seriously needs to lift his game in terms of properly serviced safety equipment, & boat ladders to facilitate much easier access for divers returning to his RIB.
I strongly recommend Casa Do Mar guesthouse for anyone wishing to stay at Tofo.
