Comments Mafia Island is the perfect spot to add in some diving if you are fortunate enough to be visiting East Africa. We did a four night/three days of diving package and found it far better than Zanzibar where we dove 12 years ago.
A very professional, friendly dive shop. Varied diving: surprisingly interesting muck dives from the shore, wall dives outside the bay, drift dives, hard coral gardens. Healthy reefs, not as many larger fish as one could have hoped for, but plenty to keep two experienced divers happy for the 8 dives we did.
Dive times are tide dependent, and thus the schedule of times for dives available each day moves a half hour up each day. You have to be flexible, but we were able to schedule three dives daily. Diving is done off of traditional dhows that have been adapted for divers. Sometimes you sail back to the shop after motoring out. We enjoyed the other sightseeing options the shop offers: whale shark snorkeling (a 45 minute drive across island), visit to traditional village at Chole Island a short ferry hop across the channel. Very friendly and knowledgeable multi-lingual dive guides and owners
