Comments Steve runs a very efficient and diver-friendly operation. You meet him at the habor launch ramp (between Kailua and the airport) at 9:15 and sometimes pass by a school of dolphins to and from the dive sites. Steve serves half a sandwich and drinks during the surface intervals. His boat is 30 feet with twin outboards, has a canopy to block the sun and a great ladder – no smashed fingers. He guarantees his reservations, never cancelling because of too few divers, like some of the other dive operators will. He washes and dries your gear overnight, having it on the boat and ready the next morning.

His divemasters (Brian for 4 days and Bob for 1) were very experienced, enthusiastic, helpful and friendly. They have great eyes, finding very hard-to-find fish and critters, such as leaf scorpionfish, octopus, etc. Our group, never exceeding 6, included both very experienced and novice divers, but they easily accommodated both, leaving the more experienced-low air consuming divers in the water on their own long after the novices surfaced. Some of our dives exceeded 80 minutes.

The corals and critters at the Kona dive sites were much better than the ones I recall in Maui. The not-to-be-missed dive is the manta ray night dive. Four mantas did their graceful feeding dances for about an hour, often passing within inches of our heads.

My only criticism was that the 3 mm wetsuit my nephew rented from Steve had a 10" tear leaving the back of his right shoulder open. It was the only wetsuit available that fit him, which was surprising, since I think he ought to be an easy fit at 5'-9" and 150 lbs. He's young so didn't mind, but I was sometimes cold in my 5 mm.
